Twin Peaks Season

If you didnt know Autumn/Winter is Twin Peaks season. I just made that up. Getting prepared for this great time of year I been digging out all my old Twin Peaks pieces and looking around online and I found this. If you haven't heard the Twin Peaks soundtrack I highly recommend it. Most of Lynchs music is composed by Angelo Badalementi whom Lynch describes as loving 'like a brother' and they are so similar is funny. This is a great video, enjoy.

I have a massively busy two months ahead of me. As well as My work load and some great releases, I have The Haus Of Godmachine print house and studios as well as my birthday and some family and friends birthdays. And my cuz is getting married- sucker.

A while back Vannen watches approached me to produce a design for their new XL range of limited edition watches. I jumped at the chance and made quick on producing something very different: The Tempus.
These are very limited and each one comes in its own black body bag, the face is printed with a clear matte graphic and each second will mark each passing breath you take; so live life people, live now, you cant take anything with you so you may as well have fun now. DEAD SEA MOB

Its been a while since my last blog post- mostly due to having a Facebook finally- you can find the links on the side- if you can't be arsed- here FACEBOOK.
If you haven't heard, I've been shanghaied into the art collective known as the Dead Sea Mob; which consists of world renowned artists such as Drew Millward, Tom Hovey and Tom J Newell. This is just the away team, the home team consists of Andy Council, Dan Mumford, MegaMunden and a load more.
Our First outing was at the Diesel DSL55 Gallery in London The show went off with a bang and for our first voyage and it went down a storm. Our second outing was at the Pure gallery in Whitley Bay, Newcastle and is still running now. It was a massive success and you can buy all original prints from all the artists at the gallery still, very limited editions though- at most 1 of 10.

I sometimes get asked to produce designs for Birdhouse and love doing so, who wouldn't; its Tony Hawk. For a long time now Brandon over at soup graphics has been telling me that they have been used as Tech Decks. My more recent full deck board arrived the other day and to my surprise they named it 'Godmachine',(they altered the design somewhat but its still rad) and not only that but at the bottom of the box was the Tech Decks and a load of stickers. When I went to Uni I have a chance to sit next to some of the greatest artists I met...which was odd because this was a graphic communication course (I spent my time in the bar). I sat next to one guy in particular called Adam Fisher, a pleasant, unassuming brilliant fellow who went on to live life and do great things. Adams weapon of choice was a biro. The things he could create and draw with a biro would blow my mind...a biro. It is this morning over my coffee having my heart and my mind touched by art that I am reminded of the term 'a bad artist always blames his tools'....Jimi Hendrix would kick yr ass on a shit guitar....and please stop telling me I need this program and that program...none of them make you draw better. Halloween

So for the past 4 or 5 years I have spent Halloween alone- just me and Bear. I have always had an outfit for bear but never myself; last year bear dressed as Satan, little horns and a cape. As everyday is Halloween for me I enjoy staying in watching you mortals vacation on the dark side while I work. But this year I am dressing up...as The Beast. I am making a mask for myself that has already been forged with blood (i cut my finger to the bone- ooooo thats gonna get glue in it and sting), all black body paint and completely naked...just as nature intended. I will post pics when I'm done ;D

"Using around 3,000 still images, Andersen M Studio has animated an extract from Maurice Gee's novel, Going West, for the New Zealand Book Council...
Colenso BBDO commissioned Andersen M Studio to create the stop-frame animation, which took around eight months to complete. The film was designed and animated by the studio's Line Andersen (one of CR's Creative Futures from 2006) and photographed by her brother, Martin, who set up Andersen M Studio in 2000.
"The entire film is handmade, using only 10A scalpel blades and paper," explains Martin Andersen. "It was photographed on two SLR cameras and lit using Dedo lights."

The film is currently showing as a cinema ad in New Zealand and has been released on DVD as part of a promotional pack for the upcoming film, Under the Mountain.

Godmachine New Iron Fist Art Print

Today I had booked time at the local Uni to print my new piece. I have chosen a piece I did for Iron Fist a while back and wanted to do something very special instead of the normal screenprint for a change.

I decided to make it a drypoint print. Essentially, drypoint is scratching an image into a surface, filling the scratches with ink and pressing it on to paper. It is a long long awkward process but achieves a beautiful result and done as I like to do- each one is different and absolutely unique and cannot be reproduced.

I chose to print on this beautiful hand made paper I found, really expensive but so worth it.

First soak the paper; its needs to be moist so it can be pressed into the small scratches on the plastic. Depending on the paper type it can take from 10- 20 mins.

In the meantime, while your paper is soaking you can ink up your plate- I am using and A3 sized piece of PVC with my images scratched into it- you can use a nailed glued to a piece of wood or any sharp object- you can buy special tools- but a nail is just as good; whatever works for you and feels right.

Here I have my inking area set up; the paint gun, the squirt of ink (oil based), a small piece of square card (white pictured) to scrape the ink into/onto the plate/PVC, gloves (shit gets everywhere and later when you are getting all the paper sorted- you will need clean hands), a load of coarse rags to remove the excess ink from the plate.

next, place a piece of clean paper on the surface of the Big Rolly Machine That Loves Fingers. and place your plate on top of it ink facing up. Your hands need to be clean now- any ink anywhere else other than on that plate is Game Over.

now go get yr lush hand made soaked paper and roller it gently like it was the face of your lover between two piece of blotting paper to remove the excess water.

Lat the paper on top of your inked up plate- don't worry about getting it too square- we can trim it later- just make sure there is a big white space on all sides.

then you lay another clean sheet of paper of the top and make sure its clean and smooth to soak up the excess moisture.

Then roll down the three pieces of felt- very important that they don't have any creases or folds in them and they must be CLEAN- you getting the drift here?

Now roller the big wheel of doom

now once rolled through- carefully pull back all the felt and sheets of paper and lift up your paper ready to place on the drying rack. Repeat process.

This is only a sneak peak for now. I will be releasing the very very limited edition tomorrow. The fact that they take so long to do and that each one is unique will push the price up a little but they are so worth it and so beautiful- even if I do say so myself. Each one will be numbered and signed.

Gill Scott Heron and Chris Cunningham

This is a beautiful video as you would only expect form these both young and old greats. The video takes its time as if from age and has the classic layers that Cunningham does so well; just small points of light. I first heard this song properly on Terry Gilliams 12 Monkeys and it struck a chord with me; only being able to describe it as 'haunting' as someone I greatly admire would say.
The next time I heard this song was on ol' youtube and the most touching story ever was in the comments section, I think I will remember it till the day I die. Sadly the comments were disabled due to this beautiful comment. If I remember rightly, the comment read;

"I love this song. when my husband found out he had cancer and didn't have long to live we would dance each night with the windows open in the living room before bed listening to this song. Thank you for posting it"

Ol' Godmachine here ain't afraid to admit that every time this song plays I get a little emotional now.

Our Live Art Party was a great success thanks to everyone involved; Cardiff Arts Club, Drew Millward, MrGauky, Milgi, Cardiff Arts Institute, Disturbia, Ben Genius, Sam the DJ and everyone who helped and most importantly of all; all those who came.

I dont think you can tell how busy it was from these pics at all. There are more pics and footage to come from our resident Cardiff Arts Club documentary maker Ben Genius.

It was a great turn out and an amazing atmosphere. We gave away about £400 plus worth of Disturbia shirts and god knows how many Drew Millward prints- all for the measly price of a £2 raffle ticket.

It was such as success I am already in talks with a few more artists to do a few more nights- if you have any suggestions or want to 'get involved' as the kids say- feel free to email me.

So after a while of looking for models to help with some of the harder poses Vicky finally wangled herself in to the job. Victoria has posed for Bizarre mag. Suicide Girls, Loaded, a thousand tattoo mag covers and so on..all the usual stuff. She is also a globe trotter for MAC being their leed body paint artists for Milan cat walks and some shit....
So after a quick photo shoot in which I felt inadequate with my point and shoot digital camera she showed me her portfolio- and I have to say I was blown away- she does these in her dinner break in work. I knew she did a bit of drawing but never got round to having a proper look at her work- I took a few phone snaps and wanted to share them with yous guys. I will be commissioning her for a piece and would even consider her for a tee design in the future- she is gonna be big soon! Travis (co-owner of Iron Fist) and Nick (European distro') were the ones to give me my first break in the business selling my first real tee design to them. I have lost count of how much work I have done for them now and Travis and Nick have always been there to support me and help. The posters arrived this morning in all their glory. The priters dont mess about- they are the best prints I have ever seen. I spent the morning numbering and signing them and then packaging them ready to send in the morning.

I wrap each poster in tissue paper so it slides out of the tube easy with no damage and also helps protect it en route. Also splap a sticker in there. I found this lush sea green/blue tissue paper- I always try to match the paper with the print for uber sexy.

Their printing skills are quite profound- I swear they use a bit of witchcraft- its so perfect.

I get a lot of emails asking if I will be reprinting anything; the answer is no. Once these are gone they are gone. I don't even own some of the old posters I printed. Only one per person/sale please.

My mate James is pretty special, so special that I named my old cat after him; he too was ginger and fun and crazy. James runs CSC (cardiff skateboard club) and got me my first skateboard design job. James has been banging on about a 'special present' for a while now and I was fucking stunned to find out what it was tonight.

The opening of the Deckades art show last weekend in Bristol was a runaway success with many people travelling from far afield to see Shiner Distribution's unparalleled board collection as well as the many hand painted boards that were procured from various skate related artists.

The collection itself was accumulated over a 30 year period. Many of the decks that came through the warehouse to hit your local skater owned shop was down to the vision of Shiner's owner Chris Allen who had the foresight to stash one of each classic over the years. This major chunk of skate history, with some rare and highly sought- after boards has been sitting in storage for a number of years and this is the first time that it has been on show anywhere so with the help of Howies, the entire vault of this legendary collection were shown in its entirety.

Following the opening night of the exhibition, Allen reflected on the emotions that ran high saying: ‘We are stoked to be able to share our skateboard archive that we have been saving in our vaults for the past 30 years. After the launch party on Friday night it gave me such a buzz to see how stoked people were to see the boards they first rode when they started skating.’

But it doesn't end there. To add a contemporary feel to it 27 artists were invited to paint a one-off board to be on show and later auctioned off for the childrens charity UNICEF. Artists involved in this project include Kev Grey, 45RPM, Mr Bowlegs, Andy J Miller, Gavin Strange, Will Barras, Rich T, Ponk, Mr Bingo, Nigel Peake, Nick Hand, Millie Marotta, James Joyce, Nick Hand, Matt Sewell, China Mike, Phil Harvey, Marcus Oakley, Mr Jago, Jim Phillips, Geoff McFetridge, Pete Fowler, French (MINE NOW HAHAHAH) , Chris Bourke, Danny Wainwright and Jethro Haynes.

First of all sorry for the fact that you will be craning your neck to see some of these.
So last night we had Secret Wars (if you dont know- google it) in a club down the rd from me. The teams were Cardiff Vs London. Dont know anyone from my home town but I knew the amazing MrGauky and had the chance to hang out with him. He is a northener who likes drinking and trouble...we hit it off instantly.

The teams had 90 min to complete their pieces. I wanted to represent my home town but My gaukys piece alone would have slaughtered everyone. Seriously we discussed the fact that he did his part in like 30 mins and it beat everyones hands down. i know art is personal, but seriously.

So I bet the handsome freak a pint that he would win easy. I ended up buying him and his lady a drink, can you believe it- he lost, well, london lost. seriously? I am in no way biased- I mean its my city- but he lost?! Not suprising that all the judges were Welsh.

I dont even recognize I'm doing it, It took this video to bring it to light for me and for my wife to state I have the same frame of mind. Its something too I tell my friends when someone doesnt say thank you or doesnt return favours or doesnt appreciate the effort...I tell them that we do it because we are good people, we dont do it for rewards or thanks, they are nice, but ultimately we do it because its the way we are. We shouldnt let others stop us being this way either.

When I first moved to the city I was forever stuck in door ways holding doors open for people nodding hello- I am sure people thought it was my job. My city friends would look at me strange when I would rush to help a lady with a pram or a person whose bag had split- how can you not?

Do you perform unseen acts of kindness- does it hurt when you are not rewarded? Have you given up on manners because 'no one else uses them'? meh, no one is perfect, but its nice to try sometimes. I have too many examples in my life to mention here so will leave the Magnificent James Randy say it much better than I.

David Lynch. Lost Highway

Just one of those films that if you 'get it'- terrifies you. If you dont, its just an odd film. David Lynch is into transcendental meditation and likes to go 'fishing' into his subconscious- the results are films that touch on the most base of human emotions. Again though, you wont 'get it' if you are looking to get it. For a modern cultural point of reference, remember how Donnie Darko made you feel? But you couldn't explain it to people- that's what, IMO, David Lynch films are- a feeling. Shit, go youtube the man talking about his films, you wont understand a word he is saying, but damn if it doesn't feel ace. The Lost Highway DVD brand-new will cost you about £17. I dont know why its so expensive, ....I guess they charge what they are worth....

So my Cardiff Arts Club, or Cardiff Watercolour society, was a part of the Big Fuss weekend which saw us draw all over a window, giggle at the poetry reading and shout at the gay sailor DJ (sorry sam- you were in the gayest boat I have ever seen and you played that bloody '6' song).

We are the worst club ever- having previously been to a jazz session shouting 'Im a tom waits bender' at the band- then shouting 'you've got a nice cock' in the life drawing classes and then wailing 'eat the fucking cake' at the poetry club- we decided to make a hash of the Milgis window.
Got to love the Milgi gang for letting us draw pink pentagrams all over thier windows- I even had a catholic school girl drawing upside down crosses for me- t'was a good day in GM land.
Sadly the yert (a Mongolian tent out the back where events are held) has collapsed and the poetry club/reading/event was forced inside with us- it was horrid. I dont doubt what they do is good, but its not my cup of tea. We clicked our fingers in true beatnik style after each dreary dreadful painfully shit poem- although the burlesque compare at the end used a lot of swear words and interest picked up from the CAC camp.
We didnt know what we were gonna draw and had not planned anything- but I was wearing a tee by palehorse that was a day of the dead lady so we took inspiration from that. The event is supposed to be interactive and our plan was like last time to get a load of people to join in and help colour the piece. we did have a lt of help- from a catholic school girl (love saying that) and from the photographers (he was doing a time lapse of the window) girl; sammy. Without sammy it wouldnt be what it is- respect to sammy who blew me away with her dedication and effort and skill at helping colour over 50% of the piece.
In all was a great day/night, hung out with loads of people- met some twitter friends and the night finished off with a polka/jewish band that kicked ass and had everyone on their feet. check out: www.klezmerkollectiv.com

The God Machine / The Demon Seed

It only occurred to me lately That Demon Seed is another name for Godmachine....wait...I'll explain...in 185cough cough I forget, John Murray Spear a New England priest tried to make the Godmachine. Having said that spirits spoke to him in a dream and gave him instructions to build a machine, that was to be no less than a god! Spear was a dude for his time, opposed to slavery and all for womens right often speaking out publicly against them, even receiving a massive kicking from a mob of turds for doing so. It was after this kicking that Spear started all his spiritualism/poltergeist crap and left the church. He was the first guy to try to control/talk/contain/use spirits using copper and zinc structures (see ghostbusters movie for reference- the building). Well, to cut a great long story short- Spear got together a gang of nuts- built the machine that was god and tried to get it to mate with a women and then he vanished.
Years later, Dean Koontz a great suspense and horror novelist wrote a book about an intelligent sentient machine that conceives a child with a women it is holding prisoner in her home. It was made into a film that spooked me as a kid almost 20 years ago now and stuck in my mind. Totally inspired by Spear, the book was called: The Demon Seed.

But after showing me danny smiled and said 'good eh- I hope this is an indication of things to come; it was of 4 people fucking with animal masks on- remeinded me of the shinning and various websites...danny was telling me about. I thought I was gonna be clever about this issue- but now it seems its a case of out-perverting each other. submissions accepted now.

Food for fridays thinks

Having no purpose gives me a sense of freedom- I do not know any other way. I think when I was younger I bought into all that jazz about being special and sanctimonious- but now I feel I am no more special than the grass or the wind (or poop or mold - I figure I best give a less than hippy example too so as to not come across as a complete tree hugger)- which honestly drains me of any fear I used to have. There are laws which you may adhere to that make you feel comfortable, but be careful that these laws don't become obsolete over time and you are left having to justify them to people who have moved on, or coming up with strained complex failing reasons what they actually meant...and so on.... If somethings dont make sense- dont jump to conclusions of force and answer.

On friday night last week we went out to celebrate a friends birthday and I got into a brilliant conversation with a lovely lady I once met years ago. A topic of conversation was ghosts and I asked her if she believed in them, to which she replied 'yes'. I asked her why ghosts did what they did; hung about moving things and lurking in dark rooms. She told me that they remained on earth for some reason or another and had a lot of information for me on ghosts.
I then asked her where she got all this info from and that I actually knew all this information also. but even knowing all the same things as she did, I did not believe in ghosts. I also asked if there was any evidence that was undeniable and stood up without a doubt. She replied 'no'. But then a great things happened, she told me that although she had no reason to believe, no evidence to prove and no solid information that wasn't gleaned from spooky films and hearsay, that she just liked the idea of ghosts. She said it made her feel better and helped her deal with things- but she knew her beliefs existed for that reason alone; to make her feel better.
I only wish more people could be more honest with themselves. I often think my ideas are biased and will spend hours researching the other side- all sides to draw the factual conclusion from them. Its why I started listening to fox news radio; to see if I wasn't just biased through comfort etc.

P.S fox news is still a bag of shite- but cant stop listening as its like car crash radio.

I love the lines and the ink that smears over the blank spaces, a real challenge will be to remember that when doing the new piece.

true story: met a guy in the pub and saw he had a giger tattoo- we started chatting about it and he seemed sheepish about the whole affair. after a while I found out the problem. all those that know gigers work knows that his work incorporates his fascination with birth, sex and death; all being one and the same and is able to sometimes hide the penises, fannies, foofies and boobs in his work. the guy didnt know this, just liked cool art. the tattoo was running down the inside of his bicep...he then lifted his arm up and then it was clear, from a different angle. the guy had tattooed what can only be described as a veiny bio-mechanical cock on his arm. no wonder he was a bit sheepish about it all hahha

Wow, did this so long ago it seems, been sitting on it for what seems like ages. I wanted to try halftones in my printing studio so remembered I had this, and after getting the go ahead off Rockett (the original 4 col' tee is out very soon) spent the day printing it. After various colour schemes I decided to go with grey on black, it being my long time metal buddy combo- and is quite popular these days.

Available now as an A2 one colour print on 270gsm paper. Only 30 made. Available now from the store. Gnarly old owl skull dude. Sorry about the weak photo skills.

Had another great CAC meeting tonight to discuss the future issue of Designer Violence; SMUT. still looking for submissions; as we ate noodles, were sized up by chavy gansters, we thought of some great ideas- and have been sent a few already. Details to submit can be found in previous blog entries and the designer violence site.
Other topics of concern and interest were DV DJ at Cardiff Arts Institute on sunday, CAC are attending to do a bit of karaoke...that's my plan anyway. A mention is some rag about the upcoming DV launch and Shaped By Fate joint DVD launch at the Barfly- should be good- get down there to see the 'savious of UK metal-core'...everything is 'core' these days...whats all that about eh?
On our way to Jamie Olivers restaurant (we opted for a noodle bar in the end) we saw the rehearsals for a street catwalk performance; loads of models looking great and dancing and we even saw a boob as it jumped out at us during a routine. This is a pic of the boys watching...During the show some bloke rode past on his bike screaming 'down with capitalism, down with capitalism' which had us in stitches laughing.
After noodles we found ourselves in a jazz cafe that served neither coffee or played jazz (after the band had finished). I bought a CD off the band and am listening to it now. jazz. as we left the cafe I shouted at the guitar player 'Im a tom waits bender'...I really dont know what that meant or why I said it, but it rocks.

As part of my education about screen printing or indeed all forms of printing I am learning great things such as Artists Proof, Printers Proofs, and all the varied ways to sign a print and the rules to signing prints.

Its with this knowledge that I am selling my AP's. I was informed that when a job gets printed the printer often send the test prints to the artist for him to proof; to see if everything is as he/she wishes. These APs (they are signed AP/1 and so on) can be many and varied and are known to be more in demand to collectors as they are few and rare (the artist usually keeps these or gives them to collectors as presents). Seeing I am both the artist and the printer, and I ended up doing 7 pieces before I got what I wanted- I figured these would be great to let people get a chance to own and sign myself.

Printers also get to proof and sign pieces and these are also collectible, although not as collectible as APs.

I have kept AP/1 for myself and that's all I need and have decided to offer up these pieces to you awesome people at the same price as the others.

Hopefully, the plan is that I get good enough at printing that there will only ever be one, as I will get it right first time.

Next week I intend to print some more pieces- another one colour piece to get my large printing technique down then move on to bigger things again. I will try and make a short video on how to sign different type of pieces if I have time; its very interesting.

For now though: go snap up the APs if you want one: you can see the lighter grey running through it as I test which shade of grey I want (I went with death metal dark grey eventually)

It was uncool when we hit teens, but then when you learn of the paradoxical nature of 'cool', we started to call them daps again and I stil do to this day. The lovely Nick over at Osiris sent me some new daps and in return I did and am doing some work for them, but more importantly I taught them the word 'daps'. Nick taught me the word 'scrilla' (I think thats right) which means 'money'. I did not have to lay down any scrilla for my daps. safe!

I found this is a shop that sells old peoples stuff after they die- its great, I have to work really hard at trying to forget where all the stuff comes from.
